Discord to Telegram: Right Group, Wrong Topic?

If a Discord message reaches the right Telegram group but the wrong topic, check the task’s Target and Target Topic separately. The chat ID identifies the destination group; the topic ID identifies a conversation inside it. In D2T Auto Forward, the official task settings document separate controls for both. A correct group name or a RUNNING status is not proof that the intended topic is selected.
This guide is for an operator with an existing Discord-to-Telegram route whose notices appear in General, another topic, or a combined message view instead of the expected updates topic. Start by locating one delivered copy, confirm the saved destination pair, then test one fresh harmless message before widening the route.
Auto-Bot.io is a separate editorial publisher, not the developer or operator of RedFox’s Discord to Telegram / D2T Auto Forward. Product and Telegram documentation were checked on October 20, 2026. The examples below are illustrative; this is not a connected-account delivery test. The featured image is a concept illustration, not product UI.
1. Locate the copy before changing the route
Open the Telegram group and find the specific forwarded message. Record where it actually appears, which bot or integration posted it, and the corresponding Discord source message. Do not infer the destination from a notification preview alone.
Telegram has a View as messages setting that can display messages from all topics together. It affects the current account’s view, not the forwarding task’s destination. If your client is using that view, open the message’s topic context before concluding that the bridge sent it to the wrong place.
- The copy is in the intended topic: investigate the viewing or notification experience separately. Do not edit a correct route to compensate for a combined view.
- The copy is in the correct group but a different topic: inspect the task’s Target Topic and the identity of the task that produced it.
- The copy is in another group: check Target first. A topic setting cannot repair the wrong destination chat.
- No copy can be found: broaden the investigation to task state, source access, filters and destination permissions. The official D2T troubleshooting guide covers that different starting condition.
If the route is actively sending to an unintended destination, pause the affected task while you investigate. The documented task control is Stop Forward; deleting the task is not necessary just to inspect its settings. Pausing future forwarding does not retract copies already delivered.
2. Read the destination as a pair: chat plus topic
The D2T task-settings guide lists Source as the Discord channel ID, Target as the Telegram chat ID, and Target Topic as the specific Telegram topic. Its Edit Task section provides Edit Source, Edit Target and Edit Target Topic.
Open the task responsible for the observed copy and compare all three identifiers with the intended route. A familiar label such as “release-feed” is helpful for people, but the saved identifiers are what you need to inspect. Keep the source and unrelated content rules unchanged while correcting a destination mismatch.
Illustrative route: a team wants Discord’s #release-notices channel to feed the Updates topic in its Telegram Project Room. The same group also has General and Support topics. The following is a diagnosis aid, not an observed D2T result.
| What you find | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Project Room is correct, but the saved topic belongs to Support | Confirm the Updates topic ID in Project Room, then change only the topic selection. |
| The saved chat belongs to a different Project Room | Resolve the chat identity first, then obtain the topic ID from that exact group. |
| No specific topic is saved, although Updates is required | Use the documented topic field; do not assume the intended topic will be inferred from its name. |
| The saved pair looks correct, but another copy arrives elsewhere | Check other tasks and integrations before changing this task again. |
The task-creation guide also separates required Telegram Chat ID from optional Telegram Topic ID. Optional means a task can be configured without that field; it does not mean a particular named topic will be selected automatically. This guide makes no claim about every unset-field fallback.
3. Do not mistake a message ID for a topic ID
When checking the intended destination, open the actual topic in Telegram and inspect a link copied from that context. Telegram’s official message-link reference distinguishes the group, thread and individual message. The last number in a copied link is not always the topic ID.
These are placeholder patterns from Telegram’s documented link syntax, not links to real groups:
https://t.me/c/<group>/<topic>/<message>: the topic/thread segment is before the individual message segment.https://t.me/<username>/<topic>/<message>: the same distinction can appear in a public group link.https://t.me/c/<group>/<message>?thread=<topic>: another documented form carries the thread identifier in a query parameter.
For example, if a link from an ordinary message contains both a topic segment and a message segment, copying only the final number selects the message identifier—not the separate topic identifier shown earlier. Do not paste the entire message link into a numeric Topic ID field.
Telegram’s forum documentation explains that a non-General topic’s ID is the ID of the service message that created it. A link to that root message can therefore open the topic itself. An ordinary later post has its own message ID. Check which kind of link you have rather than applying one “take the last number” rule to every URL.
Confirm the chat ID separately using the D2T identifier guide. Do not treat the group segment of a private Telegram URL as a ready-to-paste value for every chat-ID field. If the link format does not clearly expose the intended topic, ask the group administrator or product support to confirm it instead of trying nearby numbers.
Keep General separate. Telegram treats General specially at the API level. Do not translate a Telegram API example into a D2T setting by assuming that entering 1 or 0 is a universal fix. For this case, identify the intended non-General topic and verify the value saved on the task.
4. Check whether the topic still exists and is open
After confirming the group and topic pair, open that exact topic in Telegram. Telegram documents that topics can be closed, preventing further messages, and that non-General topics can be deleted. Ask the responsible administrator to check the topic’s current state and the sender’s access before you try another forward.
If someone deleted a topic and later created one with the same name, verify the new topic’s identity. A matching display name is not evidence that an old saved identifier still points to it. Do not delete or recreate a topic as a troubleshooting shortcut: that changes the destination and can remove its history.
Do not confuse posting access with permission to manage topics. This workflow uses an existing destination topic; it is not an instruction to grant broad rights or enable automatic topic creation. Likewise, topic organization is not permission to redistribute private Discord material. Use only content and destinations you are authorized to connect.
5. Verify one fresh message, not just a saved setting
Use a controlled source and destination with no sensitive content. Keep the intended group/topic pair recorded, and avoid an overlapping second task that would make the result ambiguous. The following is a reader-run acceptance plan; no delivery result is claimed here.
- Read the edited task back. Confirm Source, Target and Target Topic after completing the change. If the task was paused, resume only when its destination and audience are correct.
- Send one distinguishable harmless source message. For example, “Topic route check A — no action required.” This text is illustrative; it must satisfy the task’s existing inclusion rules.
- Inspect the destination itself. Open the intended Telegram topic, find the exact copy and compare its text and sender. Save the source and destination message links in your private route note.
- Check the previous wrong location. If another copy appears there, identify its sender and associated task. One correct copy does not prove that an overlapping route stopped.
- Test other content shapes separately. If the real route carries attachments or replies, inspect those after the plain-text destination check. A text pass does not establish media handling or reply relationships.
Do not expect changing the target topic to move old copies. This verification concerns new messages after the change. Handle an obsolete or misplaced copy separately with the destination administrator. If the original problem is that a reply loses its parent rather than its destination topic, use the Discord reply-context guide.
When the pair is correct but the check still fails, keep the exact error text, task state, source message, expected topic and actual destination together. Contact support through the official documentation with sanitized evidence. Never include bot tokens, session data or private message content in a public issue. Do not disable production filters or grant support access to a real community merely to make a test easier; use a separately authorized test environment if deeper reproduction is needed.
Keep connection setup and topic sync out of this repair
This is a destination check for an existing route, not a reason to reconnect every account. If you do need a new connection, follow the current official setup guidance and use a supported bot-account route. Discord prohibits automating normal user accounts outside its OAuth2/bot API. Do not supply a normal user token as a workaround for missing source access; confirm a compliant connection with the provider.
The related Discord alert-routing workflow owns the broader decision about sources, filters and review destinations. This article narrows that decision to the exact destination topic. It does not promise automatic creation or synchronization of a Discord channel hierarchy in Telegram, and it does not import controls from a different RedFox product.
Frequently asked questions
Does RUNNING mean the correct topic is selected?
No. D2T documents forwarding status separately from Target and Target Topic. Inspect the saved pair and an actual delivered message; task state alone does not establish the destination you intended.
Is a Telegram topic the same as a reply to a message?
No. A topic identifies the destination conversation within the group. A reply identifies a relationship to a particular message. Check the topic first, then assess reply context separately if your route needs it.
Will editing Target Topic relocate earlier copies?
Do not rely on that. The documented control changes the task’s topic destination; the cited guide does not establish relocation of existing messages. Verify fresh delivery and handle old copies separately.
Check one D2T destination pair
Start with the Discord to Telegram product overview, then open the existing task in the Web dashboard, iOS app or Android app. Choose the surface you prefer; use Web/App to review the task’s management controls. The service FAQ says forwarding continues without keeping your internet connection on, so leaving the management screen open is not the remedy for a wrong topic.
Your next action: record the intended Telegram group and topic, compare them with the saved Target and Target Topic, then inspect one fresh destination copy. Correct the specific mismatch—not the entire bridge.
Check the Group and Topic Together
Review the Discord-to-Telegram workflow, then inspect the exact destination pair on one existing task.
